To the Moon!
Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1, which landed on Mare Crisium on March 2, 2025, remains the only fully successful CLPS mission to date. This milestone demonstrated the potential for commercial lunar landers to contribute to NASA’s broader moon exploration goals.
Several lunar missions are planned for 2026. Blue Origin will attempt its first moon landing with the Blue Moon Pathfinder Mission 1, targeting the lunar south pole using the Blue Moon Mark‑1 cargo lander. Intuitive Machines’ IM‑3 mission is scheduled for the first half of 2026, aiming for the Reiner Gamma region after their previous two attempts ended with landers tipping over. Additional missions include Astrobotic Technologies’ Griffin Mission 1 and Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 2, alongside a planned rover race between SpaceX and Blue Origin.
These missions reflect NASA’s push to establish infrastructure on the moon ahead of human crews. They also highlight the persistent technical challenges of lunar landings, underscoring that despite rapid technological advances, returning to the moon remains a difficult and high‑risk endeavor.
